Cancer Program Narrative Description:

Virginia Hospital Center, founded in 1944, is a community hospital affiliated with Georgetown University Medical School. It maintains a cancer program that provides a full spectrum of oncologic services. There is a 21 bed dedicated oncology/palliative care unit (all private rooms); a Lung Cancer Center; a NAPBC accredited Center for Breast Health with a patient navigator and breast health educator; state-of-the-art radiotherapy including cyberknife, accelerated partial breast irradiation, and IMRT; all digital mammagraphy suite; a multidisciplanary cancer committee, weekly cancer conferences, and a cancer registry that has accessioned more than 19.000 cases. The program has been approved as a teaching hospital cancer program by the ACoS, participates in clinical trials, offers genetic counseling and maintains an association with local hospices and the American Cancer Society. The Cancer Resource Center has an extensive library and offers support and education programs as well as individual/family counseling. Staff and volunteers provide community programs focused on education, early detection, prevention and survivorship.
