Cancer Program Narrative Description:

Founded in 1972, Inova Alexandria Hospital is a 317-bed institution serving the City of Alexandria and surrounding communities. The Cancer Registry, established in 1980, now follows 22,000 cases. In 1989 the Inova Alexandria Cancer Center was established and a weekly Tumor Board was initiated. Program developments include ACoS approval with 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award for a Comprehensive Cancer Program. Inova Alexandria was and is the first and largest Transperineal Ultrasound-Guided Permanent Prostate Seed Implant Program in Northern Virginia (1995). A Cancer Rehabilitation program with lymphedema services includes custom fitted garments, three lymphedema specialists and an educational support group. State-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services are available, such as PET/CT, Trilogy that offers stereotactic radiosurgery, image-guided radiotherapy and CBCT. A Cancer Care Fund covers patients financial needs not covered by insurance. The multidisciplinary treatment team includes patient care navigators, certified RN’s, dedicated oncology dietitian and social worker, physics department and radiation therapists. The Cancer Center acheived, through Professional Research Consultants. (PRC) a patient satisfaction five star excellence award for scoring in the top 10% nationally for "overall quality of care." Our mission is to improve the health of the diverse community that we serve, through excellence in patient care, education and research.
