The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa is seeking an Executive Service Line Administrator to collaborate with hospital administrative leaders and physicians to lead and integrate comprehensive clinical operational strategies for all cancer services across the health system. This includes inpatient, outpatient, and procedural cancer services, spanning across multiple clinical areas and locations.

The leader is responsible for establishing priorities, evaluating progress, and positioning the cancer service line as the premier provider of cancer care within the region. This will be accomplished by prioritizing the patient experience, optimizing access, quality, and efficiency of care delivery, and seamlessly integrating research. This role will lead the vision, planning, and evaluation of service delivery, outcomes, and operational performance, working closely with the dyad partner Deputy Director for Clinical Services, HCCC Director, and other health system executives, campus leadership, and staff within the comprehensive cancer service line.

The Cancer Center Service Line Leader will drive initiatives to develop comprehensive access to care, including evaluation, planning, and implementation of both inpatient and outpatient innovative care models. They will actively collaborate with clinical and operational process teams to enhance quality and efficiency across assigned departments. This role will establish key partnerships with physicians, administrative colleagues, community providers, and external groups to influence and develop relationships that promote the service line throughout the community and neighboring market areas. The leader will support and grow referrals to position the clinical cancer center as a regional and national center of excellence.

This position plays a critical role in leading the strategic direction of the clinical cancer center, ensuring excellence in service delivery, enhancing quality outcomes, and building strong partnerships to support the overall mission of the health system’s cancer program.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Collaboration/Communication: Serve as a liaison between staff, medical staff, and healthcare leadership to support the mission, vision, and goals of the cancer service line.
  • Engage and collaborate with physicians to identify opportunities for program development, operational efficiency, and capital budgeting priorities.
  • Develop strong partnerships with executive leadership, administrative staff, and medical faculty to align service line priorities.
  • Establish a matrix relationship with administrative leaders across patient care, ambulatory services, surgical services, support services, finance, quality/safety, and regional services. Build and maintain relationships with community providers and influence key external stakeholders to promote growth and service line expansion.
  • Serve as a visible and accessible leader, promoting a positive image of the cancer service line throughout the health system and broader community.
  • Program and Patient Care/Services Delivery:
    • Lead the implementation of key tactics to support business planning, including pro-forma development, strategic planning, and successful execution of cancer service programs.
    • Partner with leadership and key departments to ensure alignment with practice standards, recruitment, budgets, and other key initiatives to enhance service delivery.
    • Represent the cancer service line across the health system, coordinating activities with stakeholders such as Marketing and Communications, IT, Finance, and Planning.
    • Strategically advance Health Care Information Systems to streamline care delivery and research, and to monitor metrics of access, care delivery, and efficiency.
    • Identify and evaluate market opportunities for service line growth across the region, leveraging data to enhance service delivery and community health outcomes.
    • Establish links with community advocacy efforts to position the cancer service line in standard-setting groups and key relationships.
  • Human Resources Management:
    • Collaborate with HR and departmental leaders to ensure a consistent approach to human resources management across the cancer service line.
    • Create and maintain an environment that fosters optimal engagement and high performance. Promote a culture of teamwork, collaboration, and accountability across disciplines and departments.
    • Hire, develop, and manage performance of staff, including program managers, clinical staff, and administrative leaders, providing coaching, mentoring, and professional development.
    • Continuously evaluate staffing models and ensure that resources are aligned to support growth and high-quality care delivery.
  • Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality, and Patient Satisfaction:
    • Support and execute health system quality initiatives and ensure compliance with all regulatory bodies specific to cancer care services.
    • Incorporate national standards, regulatory requirements, and innovative care models to support quality improvement and patient outcomes.
    • Utilize business analytics to monitor and improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity of cancer services.
    • Collaborate with leadership and provider teams to identify key drivers for improvement, develop actionable plans, and implement strategies to enhance patient/family/employee experience.
    • Align operational and clinical standards to promote best and safest care across the cancer service line.
    • Maintain and support cancer registries, and quality accreditations such as COC, NAPBC, FACT and others.
  • Financial Management/Business Analytics:
    • Develop and implement strategies to support budget priorities and address resource needs within the cancer service line.
    • Partner with department leaders to develop operating and capital budgets aligned with strategic, operational, and financial goals.
    • Analyze, monitor, and manage costs, reimbursement, and coding practices to optimize revenue and resource allocation.
    • Regularly monitor financial performance and adjust operations to meet budget targets and organizational objectives.
    • Stay current with regulatory requirements, reimbursement changes, and industry trends to position the cancer service line as a leader in clinical care and innovation.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master’s degree in Health Care Administration, Business Administration, Nursing or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates an advanced knowledge of hospital or clinical systems, policies and procedures in order to direct, plan and implement various hospital systems.
  • 5-7 years of clinical leadership experience related to program specialties that demonstrates knowledge of organization, operation, and coordination of hospital activities. Track record in program integration execution development and expansion required.
  • Professional job-related experience fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated; or demonstrated ability to do so.
  • Excellent consultative, collaboration and communication skills necessary to partner with teams from within Clinical Cancer Center and across the Health System, physicians, patients, families, and others from the community to achieve goals.
  • Demonstrated track record of success with the following leadership competencies: Core leadership competencies partnered with managing complexity, balancing stakeholders, action oriented, develops talent, managing vision/purpose, business acumen, drive for success, process management, motivating other, integrating practice across departments, organizational savvy, and data analytics.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office and computer software applications.
  • Knowledge and experience administering complex budgets and short/long range goals and strategies. - Analytical abilities to develop, design, implement and evaluate systems and prepare analysis identifying critical concerns and recommending corrective action and to develop and administer policies, budgets, operational models and oversee work of others.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to provide effective leadership.
