ACCC Honors Researcher and Community Oncologist Stuart L. Goldberg, MD, with National Award

ROCKVILLE, Md. – In recognition of his dedication to cancer research and for his efforts promoting the goals of advancing treatment and quality care in oncology, Stuart L. Goldberg, MD, is being honored with the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) David King Community Clinical Scientist Award. Dr. Goldberg is Chief, Division of Leukemia at the John Theurer Cancer Center of Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, New Jersey, and an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

Dr. Goldberg oversees John Theurer Cancer Center's myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) program, an MDS Foundation Center of Excellence, with active clinical trials and programs for geriatric patients with marrow failure disorders. His research efforts include redefining the incidence and epidemiology of MDS based on analysis of Medicare databases, and he was the lead investigator on a food interaction safety study for chelation therapy in transfusional iron overload.

An active clinical researcher with more than 75 published manuscripts and 200 abstracts, Dr. Goldberg’s primary focus has been on clinical care issues for patients with leukemia and bone marrow failure disorders. He participated in trials that led to the approval of the following chronic myeloid leukemia agents: imatinib, dasatinib, nilotinib, and ponatinib.

Dr. Goldberg received his medical degree from Pennsylvania State University and completed his Internal Medicine residency and fellowships in Hematology and Oncology at George Washington University.

ACCC's prestigious award is named after David K. King, MD, FACP, who died after a brief battle with cancer. Dr. King had a long history with the Association of Community Cancer Centers, serving in many capacities—president, chair of ACCC's Annual Presidents Retreat, and co–chair of ACCC's Reimbursement Committee. Dr. King dedicated his professional career to caring for individuals with cancer and advocating for access to quality care, the Community Clinical Oncology Program, and the value of clinical research in the community environment.

The award was presented on March 18, 2015, during the ACCC 41st Annual Meeting, CANCERSCAPE held at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, Arlington, Va.
