Biomarker Testing: Allowing Individualized Treatment for Cancer Patients

March 2022

Biomarker testing has become an incredible tool in helping doctors identify the right treatment options for a patient. Specifically, oncologists are using it as a first step in identifying which medications might work for a cancer patient. Precision medicine can provide targeted treatment and a better chance of survival. Through this process, tissues are reviewed for biological markers revealing specifics about their form of cancer – allowing their care team to choose the treatment that has proven most effective for that marker.

IOS President Sakeer Hussain, MD, an oncologist from Council Bluffs, authored an article on the topic of biomarkers including how they support patient-centered care, the need for increased awareness, rapid innovation and patchwork standards, and the barriers of coverage, delays, and cost.

August 2021

Iowa Oncology Society (IOS) President Matthew Obinna Nwaneri, MD, MBA, weighs in on the importance of a booster vaccination, especially for immunocompromised patients. "COVID-19 is likely going to be with us for much longer than anticipated, and a new norm may be learning to live with COVID-19 with its expected periodic mutations/variants over the long term. Our currently available vaccinations (despite their uncertainties) may be our only short-term protection, for now. Everyone should strive to be vaccinated."
