What's New at the HI Capitol

As cancer care professionals who experience the challenges of providing quality cancer care first-hand, HSCO members are well-positioned to educate decision-makers on how coverage and reimbursement issues affect community oncology. State and federal legislation can have a significant impact on the financial viability of local cancer programs, which is why it's so important that our members make their voices heard.

In an effort to provide resources needed to effectively advocate on the issues that are important to them, our advocacy webpage features weekly legislation updates from the Hawaii State Legislature, local news, and more.

We want to hear from you! If there is a specific piece of legislation you want to know more about, an important resource we're missing, or if you want to get more involved, please contact us!

State Legislation

Fertility Preservation Audit Request Passed
May 17, 2022

Last week marked a major milestone with Hawaii's passing of Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) 241 in both legislative chambers.

The Resolution calls on the Auditor to assess the social and financial effects of mandatory coverage for fertility preservation treatments for those diagnosed with cancer and whose cancer treatment may adversely affect their fertility. The Auditor will be required to release a report (required for any mandated coverage bill to become a law) of the assessment no later than twenty days before the 2023 legislative session.

HSCO will work together with the Association for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) as the Auditor requests information from our organizations; we anticipate the report could lead to a legislative effort to cover fertility preservation in 2023.
