The evolution of immunotherapy treatment for patients with cancer has given rise to a new class of cancer survivors whose novel experiences with these treatments require new tools and resources. In particular, managing potential toxicities during and beyond treatment requires coordinated care among multiple providers that is essential for positive outcomes.
In March 2021, ACCC joined other stakeholders in stating our support of the Access to Genetic Counselors Services Act "to update Medicare law and improve access to genetic counselors for Medicare beneficiaries." Now, ACCC is supporting S. 1450, a bill that would authorize CMS to recognize certified genetic counselors as healthcare providers.
If passed, the Medical Nutrition Therapy Act could expand Medicare Part B to cover medical nutrition therapy services for patients with cancer, who need to maintain their strength and keep a health body weight during treatment. This cancer program adapted the University of Washington’s Collaborative Care model to embed counseling services into oncology and palliative care across six clinic locations. This model allows patients to receive counseling for depression, anxiety, or other psycho-social concerns while in active treatment and survivorship, eliminating many barriers to care.
