Lawrence N. Shulman, MD, MACP, FASCO, Named ACCC 2020 Annual Achievement Award Winner

Rockville, MD - The Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) today announced the recipient of the ACCC 2020 Annual Achievement Award: Lawrence N. Shulman, MD, MACP, FASCO, Professor of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine, Deputy Director for Clinical Services and Director of the Center for Global Cancer Medicine at the Abramson Cancer Center, University of Pennsylvania.

Since 1980, the ACCC Annual Achievement Award has recognized distinguished individuals or organizations that reflect the values of community cancer care through their outstanding contributions. Shulman was recognized for not only his esteemed work as a breast oncologist and oncology-practice thought leader, teacher and mentor, but for his generous approach that drives others in the oncology profession from around the world to seek his counsel.

Shulman has a long history of work in low-resourced areas throughout the United States and internationally, including the promotion of early detection and establishment and maintenance of cancer treatment programs.

“I have the pleasure of working with Dr. Shulman at the University of Pennsylvania, and therefore have a chance to personally witness his leadership and passion for the oncology community setting,” said Randall A Oyer, MD, Medical Director, Oncology Program, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, and ACCC President. “What he’s achieved through his work in countries like Rwanda, Haiti, and Botswana is remarkable. For example, Dr. Shulman and his colleagues trained hundreds of clinicians in breast health care and provided breast exam screening to thousands of patients in four districts of Rwanda. Their efforts have led to a significant improvement in patient outcomes in an area where women have a much higher risk of dying of breast cancer.”

Shulman has held numerous leadership and advisory roles in the oncology community, including his service on the National Cancer Policy Forum of the National Academies, as the former Chair of the Commission on Cancer, the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Quality of Care Committee, and the Commission on Cancer’s Quality Integration Committee.

The award presentation and remarks from Dr. Shulman can be found on the ACCC website.
